Baby taking 2 hours to get to sleep

Hi all

Wondered if anyway has any advice or been through similar, as we are getting pretty desperate.

My 5.5 month old has always been difficult to get to sleep but recently it has got so much worse.

We have a yoga ball that we bounce on and whilst sometimes it takes awhile, it pretty much always works eventually to get to sleep, then we transfer to the cot.

But for the last week, they have woken and started crying after every single transfer, even when in a deep sleep (this used to work well for us).

And last night, we had the added difficulty that they wouldn’t even fall asleep in the first place. They were definitely tired but it took 2 whole hours before they finally fell asleep. One hour of bouncing after which I gave up, put them in their cot and kept going in and out to comfort them every time they cried. They eventually fell asleep, but two hours in I was just emotionally and physically exhausted.

I wouldn’t mind still bouncing or rocking them to sleep, if that actually worked. But now even that’s not working I wonder where else to turn. Spending two hours doing what we did last night would just be madness and not sustainable for anyone (especially my nerves!). And confusing and frustrating for the baby too.

Have been thinking more and more about sleep training and would be great to hear if anyone else was in a similar situation and managed to successfully sleep train and if so what method you used?
