Getting 17 month old to self soothe

we have this week taken the dummy away from ds who is 17 months old. Since Friday he hasn’t had his dummy. He has never overly had his dummy but used to have it for naps , when he was tired or upset.
i notixed recently he would see his dummy and put it In His mouth out of habit. Whereas before he wouldn’t be fussed it. In the day he’s been brilliant without his dummy until nap time. He has gone off in the car or pushchair without his dummy quite easily. Night time is awful. He has a meltdown as soon as I put him into the cot, even if he has his teddy to cuddle . He gets himself so
worked up . I’ve tried sitting next to the cot, reassuring him. I’ve tried leaving him in his room waiting for so long before returning. He used to be very good at falling to sleep without his dummy. Now every night time is a battle and it’s really upsetting me how upset he is getting. But he has done so well in the day without his dummy.

has anyone else experienced this or can give me any ideas to easy the self soothing in the cot without his dummy

many thanks

Forgot to add, he will fall asleep pretty easily once he has calmed down if he’s in my arms without his dummy
