okay I know alot of people out there may be really against this and think i'm a bad mommy but i have a new baby who has been very difficult to get to sleep and stay asleep ... so tonight i tried the unthinkable and placed her down on her tummy to sleep and it worked like a charm she is still asleep and i have kept constant watch over her-- is this a bad idea? am i the worst mother ever? feeling guilty, but also feeling tired...

you are not a bad mummy at all. its bloody hard work.
those first few weeks are so difficult but they do get easier when the baby gets more settled. honestly.
have you tried swaddling? (careful not to overheat swaddle = 2 sheets)

to be honest i think its just not worth the risk - the rates of cot death reduced dramatically when paretns were advised to put babies to sleep on their backs.

there are lots of threads on here about new babies not sleeping....

good luck it WILL get better

You need to look at the website sleepcurve.com. Its a new design of baby mattresses that supports the 'Back to Sleep' campaign. Its shaped to cradle your baby as though shes in your arm, thus helping her sleep more comfortably and naturally on her back. Plus it takes the pressure off the back of the head (stopping it going flat) and the slight curve that the head lies in places her in a neutral position opening the airways and helping her breathe properly. (And its got air channels to stop her overheating!!) Perfect solution!
