Is it seperation anxiety??

My 16 month old has been sleeping through the night for a few months now. I've always breastfed him to sleep for naps & bed. He still has 1 nap a day and I breastfeed him to sleep and most of the time I can transfer him to the cot and he either stays asleep or gets himself to sleep. Bedtime is a whole other story.
He starts to cry and fight as soon as I get him changed for bed, he cries the whole time and only stops when I breastfeed him.
He rarely falls to sleep on me for bedtime now, I think it keeps him awake more than gets him to sleep so I've been feeding him until he seems sleepy then putting him in his cot.
He usually cries/whinges as soon as I put him down but does get himself to sleep and the crying stops after 2-5 mins.
After he stops crying he either chats to himself or rolls around until he falls asleep.
I'm wondering if me breastfeeding him before bed is doing more harm than good as he just cries when it comes to putting him in bed from the boob.
I'm not sure if it's seperation anxiety or if he just doesn't like getting himself to sleep?
I hate hearing him cry when I put him down but he seems to calm down within 5 mins of me leaving the room.
Any advice?
