Dealing with failed naps

My LO is now 8 months old and sleeps quite well so I really shouldnt be complaining. However I wonder am I alone in finding it really frustrating when I go to put him down for a nap and the whole thing fails for no reason. It happens maybe 3/4 times a week despite the schedule being the same most days.

He's on 2 naps with about a 3 hour wake window between them and when he starts looking sleeping and getting cranky with his toys I bring him upstairs for his nap. He could be almost asleep and then wakes or starts crawling around. The frustration of having to carry him back downstairs after about an hour or so of wasted time knowing that he is tired and needs to sleep puts me in such bad humour. I feel like I cant really plan anything then as I am waiting for him to take his nap.

I guess I'm not exactly looking for sleep advice its more wanting to know if others experience this or find it really frustrating and how to deal with it and not let it ruin the day
