Co-sleeping advice

My 10 month old sleeps in the bed with my husband and I at the moment, which is lovely in lots of ways. However, now she can crawl I am worried that she is not safe unless one of us is in the bed with her. She usually goes down around 8-9 p.m., and then I go to bed around 9.30 - 10 p.m., so she's not alone in the bed for very long, but ideally I'd like her to be able to sleep for a bit on her own before I come to bed. Tonight she went down a bit earlier, but it's made me really worried about being out of earshot in case she wakes up and crawls off the edge of the bed.

Just to answer the obvious question, she has a cot but she hates it and screams her head off for ages if we try to put her to sleep in it. I've nothing against sleep training in principle (and my husband is all for it) but I cannot bear her crying for long and so haven't been able to stick at it. I'd prefer her to sleep in her cot, but I also quite like her sleeping next to me.

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice about how to do co-sleeping with a mobile baby safely. Do we use bed guards on all sides of the bed? Or something else?

Our set up works well with the cot being next to us, we're aiming to get the side back on once he's reliably sleeping through as he's 11 months, handy to be close to him atm but getting him used to his cot too, nice balance:)

That's a good idea, thank you. I will have to see tomorrow if we could get the cot to line up with our bed.

Did this work for you? Reading this thread as I’m in the same position with my 10 month old her hates her cot!

No, it wasn't practical for us. We just persevered at putting her down in her cot and eventually she got used to it. We did a bit of both at first - putting her down in her cot but letting her sleep with us for a bit after a night feed. It took a while to make the transition entirely. She's now 20 months old and sleeps through in her cot perfectly.

Bed rails are only suitable from 18 months. Lots of people use a floor bed set up.

Floor bed? Just double mattress on ground - make sure you’re following safe guidelines in terms of not being beside wall etc!
