Overtired 13month old due to single nursery nap

Our baby started nursery 6 weeks ago and all great except she takes one after lunch nap which lasts between 1-2hours (varies massively). She gets home around 530 then it’s snack and bed around 6 pm as she’s so exhausted. We then have multiple night wakes and a 5am morning wake time - we’re pretty sure because she is overtired. She’s at nursery 4days a week. Out of nursery, and before she started, she was on 2 nap schedule and sleeping 2-3hours. Night time wasn’t perfect but 100x better than now! Nursery have tried following our 2 nap schedule but they said it was impossible to get her down with the other children playing.

what do we do with the current overtired cycle? Do we just need to ride it out until she matures enough to only need 1 nap? Thanks!

I’ve been thinking about how to handle this with my own as she won’t be ready for 1 nap in time.
Until she outgrows her 2nd nap properly, could you offer 2 nap days on the non-nursery day and weekends (i.e. pre-nursery schedule) to allow her to catch up on missed sleep and hopefully that will take the edge off some overtired-ness.

Thanks for your reply @CabbagePatchMama
we do 2 nap days when she’s not at nursery. I don’t think it’s enough to catch up though as we still have 5am morning wake time and more night time wakes than we used to. She’s at nursery 4 days a week so 3 days off doesn’t seem enough for her to make up for the sleep lost, unfortunately

Surely the nursery must have other kids who nap twice a day.. what do they do for them?

We’re in the same situation but I think he’s slowly getting used to the one nap. He still has early starts but he’s better at night now and to be honest I think the time of year doesn’t help with the early starts either.

That’s a good point. I guess they happily go down for their naps. Our DD apparently gets FOMO (according to the nursery workers) and not interested in napping outside when everyone else naps. There isn’t a separate room

@Busby88 thanks for your reply. I think we’re going to have to ride it out too aren’t we. I guess it shouldn’t be too many months before she’s ready for one nap across the whole week 😆😩
