Help anyone how can I introduce relaxing time?

DS is 2+2 and he's always been a fab sleeper, 12 hours at night and 2 hours at lunch. This last 2 weeks he's started to drop his lunchtime nap, most days he won't sleep and climbs out of his cot and runs around!! I was expecting this obviously as he got older but the problem is, by 4 ish he's worn out and either extremely naughty or just lies on the floor moaning, if we leave the house in car or buggy he's asleep immediately, and won't go at night until 9-10.

So, I'm trying to introduce a hours "relaxing" time after lunch so he can rest. I've tried putting a DVD on and putting him on the sofa but he just doesn't stay there, today I tried to put him in his cot for an hour with audio books on but that didn't work either.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help us introduce some rest time?
Thanks

When we need relaxing time without necessarily sleeping, dd and I read books together or do a jigsaw.

my DS1 is 3.6 and he goes up to his room for quiet time after lunch. i tell him it doesn't matter if he doesn't sleep and he is allowed to look at his books or play quietly. I was alos happy to put a CD on but it has never come to that.

What swung it for him was the fact that i allowed him to go up on his own and he felt really grown up about that.

i would say that about 80% of the time he covers himself in his quit and falls asleep while i have a well deserved cuppa

Why not just stick him in his buggy and take him far enough for him to fall asleep, then bring him back and park him in the hall still in his buggy?
