18-month-old sleep regression through separation anxiety

Looking for some advice on what we suspect is separation anxiety with our 18-month-old boy.

He’s been excellent at bed time all his life, and since we did some Ferber training when he turned one he’s slept all the way through.

For the past week he’s been beside himself when we leave the room once we put him down. The routine of bath, story and bed has stayed the same. As soon as we go back in he settles down straight away.

We tried Ferber again but it was really tough this time and by the third night he hadn’t improved. He has also reverted to taking his sleeping bag off (he’s a clever sausage) so we have to go back in and put him back in.

For the past couple of nights we’ve sat on a chair in a corner until he’s fallen asleep. But we’ve noticed that this is resulting in earlier wake ups at 4:45 when he is beside himself crying again.

Would appreciate any guidance or tips and tricks that have helped others.
