Help with 19 month old sleep!

Hi, my 19 month old boy has never slept well, he has never slept through the night and a good night consists on 1/2 wake ups with him sleeping in my bed. I’m now getting tired of co-sleeping with my husband in the spare room and would really like for him to sleep in his own cot in his room. I understand it’ll be a big step for him but I am currently trying to get him to sleep in a cot next to my bed but he’s not having any of it and after 2/3 nights on only a couple of hours sleep I’m at my wits end! As soon as I put him in his cot he wakes, I then have to settle him again which can sometimes take up to an hour then try again. I have not yet successfully got him back in his cot when he wakes. Would it just be better if I try this in his room? I am also still rocking him to sleep every night which I don’t think helps! Any advice?! Thanks x

Yes, a few suggestions.

  1. Start cosleeping in his room first so he gets used to the room before you try not sleeping with him.
  2. You are rocking to sleep and there is lots of advice online about how to go from rocking to sleep to falling asleep next to you on a bed. You don't want to be rocking a baby in the night time as it just wakes you up yourself!
  3. Put the cot mattress on the floor and get him to sleep on there and then you roll away. You won't have any joy trying to transfer a sleeping child of this age to a cot. Trying to get them to actually fall asleep in the cot always just felt way to hard to me, they want close physical contact to relax I think.
  4. If you are still feeding at night time you could try night weaning which you could do whilst co-sleeping still if you wanted to. It will most likely reduce or stop night wakings. Look at Dr Jay Gordon.
