6 month old up for over an hour each night wake

My 6 month old was finally (after a long time of awful nights) doing reasonably well with sleep. Up 2-3x a night briefly then would be fed, nappy change and self settle to sleep.

Then since his first two teeth arrived it’s gone to pot. He was up every hour. Now He is up every 2 -3 hours after being put down and when he is awake, it takes multiple attempts between me and my husband to get him to sleep, usually lasting 1.5 hours or more each time. He will fall asleep on me or in my husbands arms (after first screaming the place down) and as soon as we put him in the cot or has been in there 5 mins and I’ve got back to bed he wakes up. It’s a nightmare and we’re just getting so annoyed by it and I’m exhausted from doing this for so long now. If we leave him when he wakes up the crying just escalates and we don’t want to controlled crying or cry it out so we just get him at that point.

Does anyone have ANY useful advice or tips or has been through it? I really hope it’s just a phase but get a feeling it isn’t :( an exhausted after 6 months of sleepless nights

Fwiw he is able to self settle as will do it sometimes just not all the time. Also I don’t think he’s still teething as he’s fine in the days and the two teeth are well and truly through
