Toddler Goes Mad at Bedtime

Hi :)

DS (25m) has always been a rubbish sleeper but the last few months have actually been pretty good - he goes in his cot awake and we sit with him until he falls asleep (me and DH alternate who takes him up each night). He has been generally sleeping through but if he has woken up, I’ve just had to go in and pat him or just sit next to him and maybe sing a bit and he’s gone off again.

For the last month however, it’s been taking him ages to go to sleep when I take him up. He’d go in the cot happily but then just start messing about and taking ages to lie down and settle. Now however, it’s just turned into chaos - he doesn’t want me to put him in the cot and he stands screaming that he wants to get out. This is also the case if he wakes in the night. He’s started putting his leg over the side of the cot as if he’s trying to climb out but he hasn’t managed it thank goodness. It only take DH about 10mins to settle him though and because of this, he’s been doing bedtime for the past few nights. He was out last night however and it took me an hour and 45mins to get DS down!!!

Why has he started playing up and why is it only for me?! I have tried getting him out and cuddling him but then he goes beserk when I put him back again! I feel bad because I end up losing my patience and getting ratty but it’s just taking so long!!! Also breaks my heart hearing him saying “I want to get out mummy” over and over but like I say, if I do get him out, he goes mad when I put him back down!

He has no issues going up to bed, he’s always quite happy to go…it’s just going in the cot now for some reason. I don’t know how we’ll get him to stay in bed when we transfer to cot bed…

Has anyone else experienced this? X

Maybe the cot is too small and uncomfortable for him now? My dc were in beds by the time they were 2. They climbed out of the cot and it was dangerous. I put a gate across the bedroom door and guard rails on the bed.

My 25mo is exactly the same. It started a week ago.

She used to be a great sleeper and would go in her cot and fall asleep easily. She’s also waking through the night and not napping.

i don’t know what to do x

Move him into a bed. Not saying it doesn’t come with other problems but DS slept so much better once we moved him. Sounds like he’s close to climbing out so not safe in the cot much longer anyway. We moved DS straight into a single bed but did bother with a gate or guard rails, both of which he’d have just climbed over.

@Piscesmumma1978 bad dreams?

I don’t think so. She’s resisting going to bed which is very new.

I’m hoping it’s sleep regression and will end soon 🤞🏻
