My daughter won’t have her second nap anymore

Hi all looking for some help really! Recently I’d say over the past week or so my soon to be 1 year old is all of a sudden full of beans and won’t go down for her 2/3pm nap. Her sleep at night as changed too. She sleeps through the night normally but now shes started waking at 3am. She sleeps with me in a cot next to our bed.

I don’t know what to do as her morning nap at around 10 she goes down for no problem at all, and sleeps till around half 11, but the afternoon naps I’m struggling.
I’ve tried feeding her more through the day to make sure she’s not hungry during the night. I’ve tried many things but I just can’t get her back to the normal routine of:
wake at 7
nap at 10
wake at 11/11:30
nap at 3pm
wake at 4pm
bed 7:30pm
I know she’s still young but I’m wondering if it’s worth dropping a nap or leaving the morning nap later and later each day until she is just down for one nap.

Im a first time mum and any helpful advice would be amazing. I just want to do the right thing for her.

It sounds like she's in a great routine.

At about her age we pushed the first nap back until lunch time and found that dc slept better at night! Good luck.

I think that’s fine. Most 1 year olds don’t have two naps I wouldn’t have thought? Mine stopped all naps around 20 months.

At almost 1, I think he would have roughly woke 6am, nap 1-2/3pm, bedtime 8.30pm. Occasional car nap extra if out. He didn’t sleep through night until about 2 years!

Mine dropped to one nap before 1 so it does happen. You'd need to move the morning nap to lunchtime and prepare for crankiness and things going tits up for a while during the transition 😂

Every child is different. My children all haf 2 naps every day until around 12 months and then stopped the final nap around 2.5yrs.

If yours really only wants 1 nap then i woulf push that nap back to 1pm-ish

Drop the 10 am nap, push it back to half 12/1

My 10 month son is on one nap, usually from 11am-1pm. Then he sleeps 7pm-6am. If he has 2 naps he’s up all night then very grouchy the next day.

The second nap seems quite late and the first nap quite long, almost like the first nap is the big lunch nap and the later nap is a catnap, which is quite unusual.

Most babies aren’t ready for one nap til 13-18 months, though they’ll try to fool you into letting them drop it.

I’d Move nap one earlier and cap it to half an hour so she’s tired enough for a big lunch nap.

one 3am wake is great though, so I’d also be tempted to just ride it out and it might fix itself. Sleep changes constantly those first couple of years anyway.

The night sleep times sound perfect, try to slowly push that morning nap backwards, it's lovely if you can get it to be a bit flexi. We pushed it back when ours was just over a year to be 11am then started to move it about so he went down anywhere from 11.30 to 1pm and had 2 hours then same bed and morning wake.

Means if you get asked to do stuff in morn/afternoon you have a bit of a flexible child and don't have to say 'I need to be gone at 11.15' , 'I'm not free until 4pm etc 🤣 which can take away freedom for some parents!

Time to go to 1 nap. I’d try giving her lunch at 11.30, down for a nap straight afterwards and bedtime at 6.30/7. Then once she’s adjusted to 1 nap you can gradually push things later if that works better for the family.

Yep. Time for one mega nap a day! I'd try to keep them going until about 12 if possible and hopefully they will sleep for a couple of hours. It's much easier than accommodating 2 naps I think.

Geranium1984 · 13/02/2024 13:33

My little girl is similar but is no way ready to drop to one nap as she's quite tired by her morning nap.

I've been waking her earlier, at 6.15am, morning nap at 9.30am for 1 hour then second nap 2.30 for an hour then bed at 7.30/8pm ish.

Shortly I'll be reducing the morning nap to 30mins and starting to pull the afternoon one to 2pm.
