Baby waking at 5am

Alice925 · 04/02/2024 05:24

My baby is 9.5months old and has slept through the night for the last few months. She has started waking at 5am and doing a poo and then not settling back to sleep. I have tried changing her and then getting her to resettle but it is impossible to get her back to sleep.
She currently naps 9-10 and then 1-3ish (obviously not always exactly the same) she eats solids really well and has her dinner at 6ish and then goes to bed at 7.30. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. 5am wakes are grinding me down 😩

I reckon her morning nap is too early and too long at this stage, so she knows she can catch up so is waking early. Also, make sure lunch has plenty of protein (e.g. humous, meat, fish, beans). Hold on, will reply again. 3 kids so ill just look up what time I did their naps that age...

I did wake 7am, 9.30-10am nap, protein-filled lunch really early- 11.15/11.30. Lunch nap 12.30-2.30. Bed 6.45 as really tired dropping afternoon nap. Also 5am wake, just check room not cold. Might be worth making heating come on or adding extra layer before this (remember someone saying they can poo to warm themselves? Not sure if that's true).

Learn to get up at 5, take turns with Dad. My babies were all early risers, once they got a bit older I'd stick the tv on and doze on the sofa

Blanketbaby7 thank you for the reply. I will try adjusting the naps and see if that helps. We have an older DD so I do find it hard to get them to bed much before 7.30 as otherwise they don't get to see their dad in the week.
I've already tweaked the heating and sleeping bag situation so I think she is warm enough.
Ironically after I posted that today she did actually go back to sleep from 5.30-6.30 so who knows.

Babies can and do do that. As others said try adjustments to sleep patterns

Does it get noisy around that time, IE vehicle/traffic or heating coming on noise etc or next dooor etc

LittleBearPad · 04/02/2024 09:54

Is there a noise at that time - boiler going on?

Blanketbaby7 · 04/02/2024 20:48

That's fab she slept better. You could start the day later e.g. 7.45am wake then move the naps back 45 mins so she's awake until 7.30pm. Or extend the midday nap if she's very tired then (with the shorter/ later morning nap, she might be). In a few weeks, make sure her room is really dark/blackout blinds or it'll be really tricky getting her to lie in.

Thank you for all the tips and suggestions. The last two days she woke up at 5.30 and then 5.50 so hoping it might just keep getting later.
I have moved her morning nap to 9.30 so will keep that and hope this continues 🤞

My 13 month old has woken at 5am approx since she was about 6 months. The only thing that gets her down again is a feed. We are gradually watering down the milk so she gets less dependent on the calories at that time.

The fact that she's doing a poo is significant, have you tried giving her a larger lunch and smaller supper? Or changing her food at night?

Also 5am waking is linked to being cold, maybe check her sleeping bag/blanket etc

Good luck x
