Wtf has happened to my 2yr old’s sleep?

My DS (2.5yrs) has suddenly started waking 8+ times every god forsaken night…….
We haven’t changed nap/night schedules.
It was fine until 2 weeks ago (did xmas break him??).

Is there some kind of leap/regression around this age (2.5 yrs)? Seems like it would be as it's so sudden and extreme.

QUESTION: if you’ve experienced this regression, how long did it take to go back to normal?? I don’t have the energy to do sleep training right now, so more inclined to just ride it out.

He’s also started coming out of his room to find us, which he never used to (would just sit in his room crying until we came). We've tried sleeping in his room but he still wakes the same number of times.

I don’t think he’s dropping his nap as he seems v tired towards end of the day.

For context - my DS has never been a great sleeper. From birth until 16 months he woke 6-8x at night, and would only let me settle him.
We hired a sleep consultant and it got much more manageable - waking once or twice, often sleeping through, and DH can settle him. It has been ok from 16 months up to now, 2.5 years old.

He seems ok physically though we’ve got a gp appointment to double check.

It's obvious that the nap needs to be dropped.

It's obvious that the nap needs to be dropped.

He seems very tired at the end of the day so I can’t see how dropping the nap would help?
I thought multiple wake ups are more to do with over-tiredness or regression?

There's a regression 2-2.5y point so perhaps that. Hopefully does not last too long.
