No idea what to do.

No change in routine etc, been at nursery since 8.5 months old.

Never a good sleeper but used to go down to sleep fine. Now is screaming and crying at bedtime so much he's sick.

I've tried staying in the room and rubbing his back etc but it doesn't make any difference

Even if he goes to sleep on me now the transition wakes him and he suddenly is hysterical again.

Is this separation anxiety? Would that start now? He's been in his own cot since 6 months.

Sounds like separation anxiety. It's a typical age for a wave of it to hit, then again around 18 months. With mine we had to go back to cosleeping for a week or two until sleep got better again. I don't know if it was just time or the reassurance of sleeping next to me, but after a few nights he was noticeably less anxious at bedtime and eventually stopped fighting it and started going down nicely again. That's when I then put him back in his room and all was well.

Has he recently had his vaccinations? Mine was awful sleep wise for about 2-3 weeks afterwards - mega grumpy and hellish bedtimes

Is his room cold? I’m going through this with my 9 month old currently, realised at 3am that she’s probably too cold in the night when the heating has gone off and the house has cooled, she has two layers on and a sleeping bag but I think her arms and hands were too cold. We’ve changed the heating settings (trying not to think of the cost!!). Fingers crossed we’ll have a better night.
