DS2 is a good sleeper but has started waking at 5. Thought it was hunger so have been giving him a bottle and then he will go till 6.30. Yesterday and today he has woken at 4.40am and I have given his dummy and he has gone back to sleep till 6 so now I think it is a habit and not hunger. Anyone had any joy with CC at this time of the morning ? If so how long did it take ( knowing I cant bear to him him cry for long...!)

i never done controlled crying at that age as its quite normal for them to wake at this time do you have toys in cot baby can amuse himself with

my ds had growth spurt at this age always nedded a nappy change a bottle of milk and his cot toy and when he was content he'd go back off to sleep

i woul dnever talk to him i would just change him feed him well he could feed himself and then i'd leave him to it with his musical cot toy and he'd go back off

My dd used to wake at that time for ages, I'm sure more than a year. I'm afraid I solved the problem by taking her into bed with me and she would soon drop off back to sleep with me for another couple of hours.

yes, we did it with ds1, and it worked after 2 (I think) mornings of about 30 mins crying.

however, I wouldn't have bothered if he'd have gone back to sleep with a dummy. just try giving the dummy back for a few more days - you might find he sleeps through of his own accord anyway.

we tried cc with 10mo ds when he began waking at 5 but didnt work - he just gets absolutely furious and howls for hours until his normal waking up time at which point we give in. we had tried cc with him in the middle of the night when younger and it was very effective so i think morning waking is different - does he seem very alert ie ready to be up for the day, which our ds does, (in which case you might be stuck with it) or is he tired and grumpy but still waking, in which case is probably a habit and cc might work?
have you tried blackout blinds? (didnt work for us but does for some). am hyperventilating with tiredness typing this (17 hour day at work, home after midnight, ds up at 5, now at work again) so do sympathise. as last resort im considering cutting down naps - anyone know how soon they can go to one nap a day?

hi woostock, sounds tough, poor you.
He seems alert worringly. Yesterday he was late to bed - 8pm instead of 7 and didnt wake till 5.45 so now I wonder if I need to cut down the day time sleep. I know it is not hunger as last night he ate really late, had a late bottle and still woke up. I've got the back out blinds, which were great with DS1. he does seem very alert but what is strange is that he will go back down at 7.30 for 2hrs at least so i think he must still be tired when he wakes. Like you the CC worked for middle of the night wakings but early mornings are harder to crack !
