2 year old sleep issue - help

My nearly 2 year old has always been an amazing sleeper - slept through the night since around 3 months old up until now.
He's in his own room, may wake occasionally if teething or loses his soother but generally a very good sleeper.

As of recently as soon as I put him down in his cot for bed he becomes hysterical and I have to sit in the room until he is fast asleep - which could be up to an hour. He never used to be like this
I've tried gradually moving closer to the door and standing outside giving reassurance but he gets louder and louder

Is this normal?
The evenings were always my time to sit and have dinner or relax and I feel I don't have that now and am at a bit of a loose end
Any help is welcome

I'm my experience this is normal and what you've had previously is abnormal. It's not in our DNA to feel safe going to sleep alone as infants. I've always had (chose to) sit with mine until they're asleep even long after they fed to sleep. It goes by so quick no issue with it personally. I don't know any adults who still want their mum to sit with them at bedtime... I know I'll miss it.

I could have written your post! My little boy (2.5yrs) is the same. Part of the problem for us was being scared of the dark so a bright night light has helped.
I’m sure it’s developmental. My 18month old daughter is just heading into this phase too…!
