9 month regression?! Hysterical screaming all night

Baby is 9 months. Never slept through but a few weeks ago went through waking a lot at night, I thought the regression. But we could easily get him back to sleep, either dummy in or hold for 5 mins

2 weeks ago he randomly woke middle of the night and screamed hysterical, almost as if he wasn’t fully awake. Went on for around an hour and wouldn’t stop. Happened randomly a few times then went back to sleeping 7-3, fed then slept til 7am

past 2 nights he has started again, sat night literally 2 hours screaming. Changed nappy, tried feeding, it was like he was falling asleep but would jolt and cry again, couldn’t get in a deep sleep

nothing has changed re schedule, he sleeps a max of 2.15 hours a day otherwise wouldn’t sleep at night and this has been working fine

he has had a bit of a runny nose and cough but I don’t think they were the issue. Is this a typical regression? I don’t know what else could be causing the hysterical crying.

Teething?

TeddyBeans · 06/11/2023 12:55

Could be night terrors - the not fully awake while screaming bit makes me wonder. My son used to do this, there was no stopping the screaming until I woke him up properly and then he'd be really groggy but would go back to sleep.

Could also be the sleep regression and there's nothing you can really do for that one except ride it out unfortunately. Don't worry about keeping him in a routine if it's the regression, my son would fall asleep on me for a couple of months while he was regressing and then went straight back to sleeping in his cot once he was done. Just gotta go with it

Ear infection?

Namechange10122 · 06/11/2023 13:16

Could be teething, he is always chomping on things but has been for months, just never done the whole wake up screaming.

i don’t think it could be an ear infection, we took him to out of hours gp on Saturday due to his cough and they checked him over although I don’t think they checked his ears

if his cough doesn’t get better tomorroW I will go to thr Gp to get everything checked I just hate to be seen as a worrier and told over reacting as a first time mum! (Again?!)

I will see if he does it again tonight and try fully waking him if it is night terrors, didn’t know they got them this young. He woke nearly every hour last night if not more and on occasions hysterically cried.

We’ve just had this with my 6 month old.., it was an ear infection. I felt awful I took so long to get him seen But as he’s always been a bad sleeper I just put it down to another regression

Livingoncaffeine · 06/11/2023 23:10

Oh and I’d also taken him to the GP the week before for his cough and they hadn’t checked his ears which in hindsight I’m annoyed about!
