Baby keeps waking in next to me crib

My DD is 8 weeks old and for the past few weeks she has been sleeping amazing I’m her Moses basket, only waking once in the night to feed (EBF).

She has started to fill it out so we got her a next to me thinking she would prefer the extra space but she just won’t settle in it!

she tries her best to self sooth by sucking on hand (which worked in the Moses backer) but it’s not doing the trick in the next to me. She’s waking up every hour (at least) but as soon as I pick her up and give her the boob to settle her she falls back asleep.

I know she’s not going to sleep as well as she had been forever, but I can tell she wants to sleep but can’t.

any tips on getting her used to the next to me?
N.B. She’s in a sleep sack and I don’t want to put anything extra in the crib.

TIA - one very tired mummy

We bought a Rockit and attached to the next to me, the rocking seems to help soothe.

If she's ebf surely she might need to feed more often than once a night, especially if she's having a growth spurt?

CatherinedeBourgh · 03/11/2023 06:29

She obviously wants to be a big snugger, I would put her back in her moses basket until she isn't sleeping well there any more.

Have you tried a swaddle? Worked a treat for my DS. Could potentially help your baby feel more 'enclosed' in a bigger space?

shes not feeding when giving her the boobs during the night (expect for the usual feed she has around 3-4am) she’s just using it for comfort to get back to sleep.

What about a dummy to help her self soothe? All three of mine were ebf and had dummies till 18 mo tha to help with sleep.

I'd bet my house she's 'eating' when offered boob in the night op. Maybe she's become a very efficient feeder and is nodding off unsettled and windy.

One feed overnight for ebf is unheard of, I think you've been incredibly lucky up to now tbh, babies (especially ebf) generally are frequent feeders and need milk round the clock. Especially during growth spurts.

Buckle up...

It’s completely normal for an 8 week old to wake regularly, and/or to feed regularly. She sounds like she’s developing normally and doing great and so are you!
its tough but normal, remind yourself of that and go with it, her pattern will soon change again but don’t expect her to do long sleeps for a while yet

I'm sorry to say but you've been spoilt and now reality is hitting. Your baby being unsettled has nothing to do with the next to me crib - it's because she's 8 weeks old and needs to feed in the night. I would try a swaddle though, to help her feel more secure and ease the transition into the bigger sleep space. That won't solve all the wakings, and you shouldn't expect it to, but it might help. It's tough, especially as it sounds like it's taken her a while to get out of that blissful newborn stage of sleeping a lot, so you've been luck so far, but frequent night wakings are totally normal and there is little you can really do

I'm not sure why you are so confident she's not feeding in the night though - I have been breastfeeding for the past 3 years (I have a toddler and a 4 month old - both currently breastfed), and I have no idea when they're feeding or when they're just suckling for shits and giggles

Update - it definitely was the next to me crib, the past two nights we had her back in her Moses basket and slept much better only waking for her usual feeds.

For those saying she was eating every time she was offered the boob, I can assure you she wasn’t. As soon as it was in her mouth she would fall back asleep not latching as her mouth would still be open.

Thank you to everyone for your helpful comments.

I have a 10 week old and this is sounding exactly like her. She can sleep in her pram bassinet top, which is approved for overnight sleeping. And will self soothe back to sleep throughout the night. Only waking the once to ebf, anywhere between 2am and 4am.
But we've tried to put her in her miniuno crib and chaos, wakes every 45 mins, arms flailing and crying. She used to sleep in the miniuno until a growth spurt, and will sleep in it for day naps but acts like it's the worst thing ever overnight.

We're just sticking with the bassinet until she can't use it anymore then will persevere with the crib I think

My 14 week old is still in her Moses basket.

Thankfully she still fits with plenty of room.

Babies are so small I think the next to me is far too big when they're that small.
