When to move from cot to bed?

Hi all

My LO is 2.5 years old and I'm wondering when to remove the side of his cot (it converts to a toddler bed).

He isn't climbing out and goes to sleep just fine. I do worry that when we remove the side, this might encourage him to get up early and play etc.

However, also trying to work out when people usually move from the cot.

Also we travel fairly regularly and use a travel cot. Would it be fine to continue using a travel cot or will that confuse him?

Thanks.

My little one moved from cot to standard single bed at 2y9m because we needed the cot for baby sibling. Never attempted to climb out either.

The first night they were super excited so snuggled in and went out like a light. Second night that worked out they could get in and out at leisure so I just put them back each time. 9 times later, they snuggled down and went to sleep. No probs since then and if they wake early, they tend to lay there and listen for us to get up then call out (despite the freedom) or they creep into my room and climb in the foot of my bed.

We used a travel cot once since making the transition to bed, purely because we stayed in a hotel 2 weeks after making the shift and hadn't booked a bed for the toddler! But thereafter it's always been a single bed with he'd guards or a 'ready bed' on the floor.

Thanks so much for the reply. It sounds like a fairly easy transition for you.

Just expect a few nights of chaos and you'll be fine . better to do it when nights are dark .

Very good tip re darkness.

We're still struggling with the clock changes so might leave it a week or two as these 0545 wake ups are brutal.

Oh they've still fallen out a few times though! Including on holiday onto a tiled hard Spanish floor 😔
