Recently wrote a thread on here about how my 8.5 month old suddenly began sleeping through the night for 11/12 hours and how amazing it felt to have sleep again!!!

However since the weekend, we are back to wake ups during the night 🙁 before he used to stir and whinge (probably between sleep cycles) but would easily nod off by himself in seconds. How we are getting hysterical tears!

My gut feeling says teething... we have all of the signs of teething (although I have been saying this on and off for months and we are yet to have a single tooth) 😂 but ruled out other things like hunger, being too hot/cold, illness etc.

Just feeling a bit deflated tonight because I have no idea what kind of night I'm in for and I really, really, realllllly enjoyed getting some good sleep again. I'm a better parent for it.

I know babies go through phases and I should accept it. But still feeling blergh and a bit full of dread and just felt like getting it out on here.

Hi again!

oh I feel you. Fri, say we went down to 2 wakings and just put dummy in and he went to sleep himself - couldn’t believe it nothing had changed! Sunday night asleep at 8-5am. I woke just before him panicking then he woke fed him and straight back to sleep til 7, that is the best he has ever ever done. Thought we turned a corner but last night he woke 3 times and was up for the day at 6am

we have also had some crying outbursts. Last week around 12 fully crying nothing would calm him even when we held him etc hysterical, no idea of the cause and same again last night at 10! I wonder teething too, my boy has the 2 bottom teeth through but still teething a lot so wondering the top ones now.

how did last night go? I hope you and baby slept all night 🤞🤞

Hey @Firsttimer1125! It's an absolute headf*ck isn't it 😂

My LO was down last night for 7.30pm. He then woke at 8.30pm and was hysterical. Back down until 10.15pm. Then up at 11pm. Then 12.00am. Then 5.30am and eventually woke at 6.15am but was happy in the cot and content so I didn't go in and fetch him until 6.45am. He was doing 7am wake ups last week 😭😭

Today I'm going to try and not give him the last catnap of the day and really stretch out that last wake window and compensate with an earlier bedtime and will see how we get on.

I honestly can't keep up, everything changes from one day to the next!

It’s so hard, you think you’re onto a good schedule then boom it changes. I am trying to stick to the same one now, wake 7, first nap 10-11.15, next nap at 3 til 4.15 then bed at 8.

he Starts nursery in 2 weeks so it will all go to pot again then I’m sure as I bet my life on him not napping at nursery!

positive thoughts tonight will be better for us both!!

FebMama · 17/10/2023 14:34

That sounds like a good schedule! How's it going today?

So far my LO did 9.15am-10.15am for this first nap.
His second nap was 1pm and he's still sleeping now although did wake up at 1.50pm and I had to go and resettle him.
I need to pick my eldest up from pre-school at 3pm so I'll need to wake him for 2.50pm 🫣
Then we will aim for a 7pm bedtime if hes able to stay up for that long without a meltdown. We shall see!!

In my experience, nursery naps do take a while to get right unfortunately. My eldest who is now almost 4, was all over the place for a bit then when he settled, naps were great and if anything I had to tell nursery to cap his naps as he was sleeping too much and not tired enough at night 😂 it's so hard to find that balance!

Let me know how you get on tonight and I'll keep you updated with how we get on too! First time I'm trying out a solid 2 nap schedule and getting rid of the 3rd nap entirely so let's see. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽

well im hoping nursery tires him out and he sleeps all night haha but doubt that happens. I’m guessing we will have a cranky overtired baby every night for a good while til he settles.

your LO has had a good afternoon nap! Mine will never nap that long.

the 2 nap schedule is working ok so far, I think it’s taken approx 3/4 weeks to settle in. But I also think we switched around the same time as a sleep regression hit but who knows eh?! It’s all a guessing game. Definitely stick to the 2 naps and early bedtime if needed. I still have to do a lot of distraction to get through the longer wake windows but he just gets bored rather than tired I think. Good luck for tonight! X

FebMama · 17/10/2023 20:03

@Firsttimer1125 he doesn't usually nap that well if I'm being honest! Before this week he would only nap 30-40 mins, and sometimes still does. Naps are really hit and miss. But I'm going to really try and extend the lunchtime nap where I can as he will always wake up part way through even though I know he's still tired.

DS2 has been down since 7.10pm after he woke up at 2.45pm today! So that's the longest wake window he's ever had I think. So far we haven't had any wake ups but I keep an anxiously looking over at the baby monitor and can't relax tonight 😩

Yep I know what you mean… you can’t relax waiting. But with such a long wake window they might surprise you. To be fair I think it’s luck half the time, no reason Sunday night should be good and other nights worse when we follow same schedule!

mines been very cranky tonight, his second nap was only an hour so approx 20 mins less, I tried holding him to get him back to sleep and he was literally laughing at me the cheeky thing! I naively thought babies slept through by now 🤣 speaking to one friend whose baby did and loves sleep then all my others whose babies still don’t sleep great!

FebMama · 18/10/2023 06:46

@Firsttimer1125 how did you get on last night?

My LO is still sleeping now 😭 absolutely zero wake ups! Could be a complete fluke haha. I'm currently up and ready and enjoying a hot coffee in peace before the morning chaos begins. I really hope it continues again but don't want to get my hopes up too much!

Aw so happy for you!

we went backwards 🤣 about 10.30pm he had a meltdown, screaming nothing calmed him, was almost like he had a nightmare or was still asleep. It’s so strange he is never ever like that but it’s happened a few times middle of the night. Like hysterical crying, we have to kiss him talk to him I think tk wake him or for him to come round.

then onwards he woke a lot! Maybe every 1 or 2 hours. I can only think was because he had a crap second nap so was overtired as he was cranky! But aside from that no other difference to when we have good nights so god knows! I just hope we have some good nights to balance out the rough, I can’t go through 4 weeks of hourly waking again 😩🙏😐

FebMama · 18/10/2023 14:14

@Firsttimer1125 oh no I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad night. Are you able to catch up on some sleep in the day when he naps? I hope today hasn't been too bad for you!
Fingers crossed for some solid naps for you today 🤞🏽
