10 month old screams when being settled to sleep

Hi all, new to mumsnet and first time posting (at 2:30am) but hoping someone might be able to offer some help and advice.

I have a 10 month old baby, and getting him to sleep is awful. For a bit of background, we started some gentle sleep training when he was 6 months using the pick up put down method (calmed him when he cried then put him back in cot to fall asleep) this was going well and we were seeing him fall asleep while laying in his cot. He was even sleeping 10-11 hour stretches. Then separation anxiety started to creep in and it got a bit harder to get him to settle, we somehow went back to holding him until he was asleep which initially was fine. However now, he screams the place down for every nap, going to bed at night and being resettled through the night.

He now has such a bad association with going to sleep that he starts crying as soon as you go in his room. Health visitor advised getting him to play in his room for a bit each day to get him to understand it is a positive place so we are starting that.

The problem is we don’t know how to start sleep training when he is crying in our arms let alone putting him down. Neither me or my partner are comfortable with CIO method but right now we are stuck.

Neither of us are getting sleep, we are both really struggling with his crying as we just don’t know what to do to calm him down. We recently started to reduce night time feeds as he was feeding to sleep in the night but this has left my partner doing a lot as baby won’t settle for me if I don’t feed him.

I have no idea what to do to start getting a routine without tears and get to a place that we can start sleep training.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

Hello. How are things now?

we’re going through the exact same thing.

all the sleep training we did successfully at 4 months has gone completely down the pan.

I hope this phases has ended for you.

Hey! We did see an improvement, it was really just him by himself but he randomly started to settle himself in his cot in the evening. We can now put him down wide awake and there are no tears and he goes to sleep.

Naps are a bit harder, and he is fighting his second nap which I have read is normal around this time.

He was sleeping through for a few weeks but has been struggling this past week due to being unwell (been awake since 4am today trying to get him back to sleep)

It’s hard not knowing when phases will end but we are seeing a turnaround for him and it just seems to be him doing it by himself when he is ready.

Hope you got some sleep last night and your little one starts settling again soon!
