2 year old crying at bedtime suddenly

Oh my gosh.

The last week has been horrific!!

my 2 year old who has always gone to bed nicely has been kicking off at bedtime.

He has started throwing EVERYTHING out of the cot and then crying for it back. He is saying ‘I want to get out’ and trying to climb out his cot but failing.

we tried a nightlight tonight, that hasn’t helped.

Any advice!

we did pop ins, every ten mins to reassure. I’ve tried sitting in there but he either is still upset or won’t go to sleep.

When did he turn two?
Have you considered moving him into a toddler bed yet? Or a single?
My daughter turned 2 at the end of August. She was in a floor bed since she turned about 15 months. I think she was going through some sort of sleep regression just before and after turning two. I raised her bed up into a single bed with bed rail on and honestly touch wood she's been back to normal sleeping through every night. Goes to bed with no issues. She loves her bed.
During the 'sleep regression' I couldn't leave her in the room alone, I had to stay until she fell asleep which could take upto an hour. She'd wake up in the night wailing and then wake up early. It seems like too much of a coincidence but the bed is the only thing we changed. Good luck, I know it's so hard xx

@NoHeavenNoMore He turned two in May.
see we thought possibly a bed! But I also think he’s too young sometimes… because I’m worried he will carry on how he is but just be able to leave his bed 😂 I think we said we’d give it a few weeks and then possibly try the bed. Thanks for your advice xxx

Bed. Honestly it made bedtimes easier for us. Yes, DS did try to get out of his bed a couple of nights but I just put him back and told him it was bedtime, a little perseverance and all is well. Yes he can get out, it give him independence and control, but he rarely does. But he gets in on his own. Even in the morning he’ll normally call for me (call “mummy” not cry) whilst in bed. We moved him at 21 months because he was climbing out of his cot and I worried he was going to break his arm or something.

@PurBal It sounds like it’s working for a few people. I’m just a bit nervous he will completely reject bedtime as his current meltdowns at bedtime are based on ‘wanting to get our’, ‘want to play’ ‘not tired’ haha x

What time is he going to bed and is he napping? Is it possible he actually isn't tired!

DustyLee123 · 16/09/2023 08:59

Mine were in a single bed by 2. I put the cot right next to the bed to begin with, so it felt familiar.

Mumlifeandstuff · 16/09/2023 09:40

@itsallnewnow So naps vary,

he wakes 5.30am

naps 12-1 and bedtime 6.30

on childminder days naps 1.30-2.30 and bee 6.30 still as he has still been up since 5.30.

Just wondering if it's worth cutting or dropping the nap? How long have you tried the later bedtime? It took about 3 weeks for us to see a difference when we had the same. Now bed time is 7:30 aslepep by 8 but 2yo sleeps till 6:30/7

Mumlifeandstuff · 16/09/2023 14:32

I don’t think it’s his nap if I’m going with my gut feeling. Because we’ve reduced his nap recently and he seems to show all signs of tiredness.

I deffo feel it’s some developmental regression either some separation anxiety or he’s testing us or doesn’t like his bed!!

@Mumlifeandstuff have you seen any improvement yet? Fingers crossed for you x

Hello. Did you get to the bottom of this? We are having the same with our son who was 2 in June and it's stressing me out as he has been going to sleep a dream lately until the last couple of weeks! X
