We used to have to hold to get our 20mo to sleep, and then started trying putting her down in cot when still awake and she was OK with it , took a few attempts of making sure she was sleepy and cosy enough first and felt comforted before putting down. We essentially went through the following stages (not planned or as any sort of sleep training but just the way it worked out!)

  1. Held to sleep in arms, placed in cot fully asleep
  2. Held in arms for milk, cuddle, books and "night night" then in cot when sleepy, we would then sit in the room with her until she fell asleep.
  3. As above but we would leave the room and she would watch us leave and then fell asleep, something that seemed impossible for ages
  4. And now, we're back in a sleep regression so just riding the wave to get through it however possible!!
