Cluster feeding and sleep patterns

Hi all new MN mum here! I currently have a 6 week old who is cluster feeding every evening. The savi g grace to this is that she then has a decent stretch of sleep from around 11pm to 330am. She will then have a quick feed and go down again until 530/6.

The evenings are draining and abit depressing but wondering if the long sleep stretch is likely to end when tanking up ends? I know all babies different and there's no way of knowing what my baby will do but would like to hear your experiences please!

Xx

It did end with DC1 I’m afraid, he’d cluster feed and was colicky/had witching hour(s) from like 5-10pm, but then would sleep for 6 or 7 hours at 6 weeks, when the unsettled behaviour peaked. With each passing week that clustering/witching got shorter so did the first bit of sleep I’m afraid!

I thought that would be the case! What kind of interval did he settle on? X

Hi and congratulations!

My baby is now 4.5m and I found that gradually, but not consistently, between 6-12 weeks the cluster feeds reduced in intensity and the ‘bedtime’ became earlier until it was about 2130.

I was still getting a similar stretch (4-5 hrs) but less of it overlapped with my sleep as I was still going to bed about 2300ish

at some point around 16 weeks I had tried to make this bedtime more like 20.00 which worked well until the sleep regression hit.

Erm…well I have to say we had a brutal 4 month regression or whatever you want to call it and we had a spell of waking every 45-90 minutes. That didn’t last too long though - by 6 months we were probably on 2 breastfeeds a night? And as PP said above, the long stretch did go but actually bedtime did become earlier, so swings and roundabouts!

That's good to know! The 2 per night bit, I'll pretend I didn't read yhe other bit! Ha! When you say 2 per night is that from his bedtime til morning?

And on a side note, when you had the frequent waking was that to feed? And did you feed every time or try other ways of soothing? Xx
