Baby Sleep Advice

Hello,
I have a nearly 8 month old who has always slept well at night from about 5 weeks old. Usually 12 hours at night with little or no awakening. The 4 month sleep regression hit hard and lasted about 2 months but he settled back down and was going 12 hours ish again with little or no awakening for a few weeks and now his sleep has been all over the place.

Sometimes he wakes frequently and other nights maybe only once or twice, but the main thing which has changed is his wake up time has slowly got earlier and earlier. The Norm is now to wake up for the day between 4am and 5am and he will just not settle back down to sleep.

We have tried offering a bottle as he would usually go back down if he did wake at this time until at least 6am, but not anymore. We have always been very strict with his bed time and he goes to sleep between 6pm and 6.30pm without any issues and settled to sleep quickly. He has kind of set this bedtime himself and so I don't believe I could push his bedtime any later as he is ready for bed at this time.

He has 2 naps a day, usually one approx 3 hours after getting up and then another in the afternoon approx 3 hours after his last nap. His morning nap is usually 1.5 - 2 hours and his afternoon nap can be anywhere from 1 - 2 hours. We have a blackout blind in his room so I can't put it down to the lighter mornings. Has anyone experienced this or have any advice to help I would be very grateful! Thank you! 😊

He is having too much sleep during the day, a 3 hr nap in the afternoon and a 6.30 bedtime is going to affect his tiredness. I would try and drop the afternoon nap.

Hello, He doesn't have a 3 hour nap in the afternoon, his naps usually total 3 hours approx for the whole day. At the moment he is having a morning nap at approx 7.30 - 9.30 then his afternoon nap at 12.30 until 1.30/2ish.... then bed at 6pm... if he drops his afternoon nap then he will be awake from 9.30am until 6pm... I think that would be way too long for him to be awake at this age wouldn't it? He needs a nap.approx every 3-3.5 hours at the moment.

They can compensate for the early wakes with their morning nap and then it becomes a habit. We fixed it by pushing the morning nap to the time it would be if it were 2 hours after when we actually wanted him to wake up. So we wanted a wake up time at 6.30am which meant nap time needed to be 8.30am and we didn’t let him nap before then. Then we capped the nap at 1 hour. We also pushed back the 2nd nap to after lunch and wouldn’t let him nap past 3pm with bedtime being about 4 hours after he woke. Sorted within about 3 days so quite quick. However, the way we fixed this with our other child was to fly long haul, get totally out of whack and do a hard reset on the entire schedule. But that is a pricy option!!

Thank you so much! That sounds like a good idea and makes sense 🙂 I will try option 1 that you suggested! Will let you know how I get on. X
