10 month old not settling to sleep

I have no idea what to do regarding my 10 month old sleeping

I used to rock him to sleep but he's too big and heavy now to transfer to the cot without me waking him up. Also, I think he's uncomfortable falling asleep on me, so he wriggles and kicks and wont settle. If i put him in the cot he cries to be picked up but then if i pick him up hes wriggling and kicking to go down. So we end up in this cycle of picking up/putting down and hes not happy either way. If i leave him in the cot (and sit beside him and try to sush him/comfort him to sleep) it doesnt help, if anything it exacerbates things and he gets more cross hes not being picked up...but if i pick him up he fights to go down. More nights than not this is happening and it can go on for hours. The crying breaks my heart and I don't know what to do to help him settle. He's never been a great sleeper but this is another level and im absolutely broken with sleep deprivation.

I'm not asking/expecting him to sleep through, i just need to be able to settle him when he wakes up and have it not take hours. I would appreciate any words of wisdom anyone might have please.

Hiya. I don't have the answers unfortunately but just wanted to say I'm having a similar time to you with regards to my 8 month old. It's tough isn't it! Flowers

SunshineIndoors123 · 02/06/2023 12:24

@owloak awful, isn't it? He just screams and nothing I do comforts him, so we just wait it out until he wears himself out and goes to sleep. I feel like it is such a horrible way to fall asleep for him. I have no idea what to do. I'm sorry you're going through similar x

Hi @SunshineIndoors123 are you able to provide an update on how things processed? I'm having trouble with my 10 month old and wondered if you found anything that helped?

Guavafish1 · 16/12/2023 23:47

Can he sleep next to you in the bed?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/12/2023 23:55

In this situation too he keeps standing up in his cot. I time all sleep time just after a bottle which can help. White noise and shhh can help
Too

@KeepCalmMumma hi, so around the time I posted this, we had some hot weather and I put at fan in his room (obviously not pointing directly at him) and I think the white noise from it helped as he suddenly started sleeping through, and did so for about 3 weeks. He's 17 months now and I can't say he's slept through continuously but things have been much improved from that point. So you could try some white noise if you haven't already, but I think mostly it was a phase he just grew out of.
