Resisting first nap

Hi all,

My son is 4 months and we have been training him this week to go to sleep in his cot (we used to use the pram for every sleep).

This is working well for night time and most naps, he goes down in less than 10 mins. But the first nap of the day he cries a lot and often we have to give up on the cot.

I'm thinking it might be a schedule thing so this is roughly what we are doing:

  • wake up around 6 or 6:30 (at least this is when he makes noise and wakes me up)
  • wake windows are 1.5-2 hrs all day depending on how long he naps, usually he does 3 naps a day
  • bedtime around 7
  • tend to wake up for night feeds roughly at 10, 12:30, 3 and 5

The only other thing I can think of is that it is a bit lighter in the bedroom for first nap because of the sun being in that side of the house, but I can't do much about that before I move him to his own room.

Any suggestions welcome, thank you all

He's only 4 months. Will he sleep on you?

Agree with pp, will he sleep on you? We found improving night sleep and naps at the same time with my eldest was too much. But if she didn't nap well it made the nights harder. I therefore focused on her getting naps, rather than worrying whether it was on me, pram etc and focused on improving nights. Once she slept well at night, naps naturally fell into place and she's napped well in her cot ever since.

It's not called the school run nap for nothing. Good idea to put him in his pram and get out for that first nap ( good for you too). Also those sleep windows seem a bit short for a 4 month old. Assuming 3 naps a day, he manage with 2.

Sorry I saw you said 3 naps.
