my ds 20mo is rattling the bars of his stairgate. he isn't crying, but he is knackered and as soon as I put him in bed he gets up and plays in his room. he is not verbal, has a drink, dummy and clean nappy, and has been doing this for an hour, what do I do??

keep putting him in bed, no eye contact .. say goodnight and leave

then keep doing it

don't make a fuss

he'll fall asleep eventually

I agree - similar to controlled crying - put him back, no eye contact, say "time to go to sleep" and keep doing it until he settles.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 07/12/2004 21:16

leave him then .. he'll fall asleep on the floor or he'll crawl back into bed .. if the former just scoop him up and put him in bed when you go up

he's testing you .. don't fall for it Smile

Have to agree with the advice that's already given. Keep putting him back - he will eventually tire (it may feel like it takes hours though Sad

thanks all. he's having a lovely time up there. I regret ditching the cot now.

hi my ds is 13mths and in bed...mainly due to trying to somersault over cot...first week was horrendous getting him into bed so what i do now is
drink n story while he is in bed
say goodnight turn light off and go and sit on his bean bag by door....when he tries to get up i tell him to lie down its bed time if he doesnt lie down i will lie him down but dont say anything else..i know its a nightmare but i think they love the freedom...i only had to do this for about a week and now he goes gets into bed and lies down once story is over he knows its sleep time so turns over and goes to sleep
i only stay in his room if he is being an imp...but he pretty much knows now that if he doesnt lie down i will lie him down
hope this helps
