6mo sleeps through some nights & self settles, others doesn't and awake every 40mins

Hiya, I don't know if I'm looking for some reassurance or someone who's in the same boat or not. I just am sick of wondering what's wrong or if it's normal!

My 6 month old went baddddly through the 4 month regression, got a bit better and then we hit 6 months. He's weaning, just breakfast and lunch and he's also on 5 6oz bottles a day.

I recently got him to sleep in his cot for all naps, he goes in awake and I just have to hold his hand or reassure him to get him to sleep. At night time he goes in cot fine and then just turns his head over and goes to sleep when he's done fussing!

SOME NIGHTS he will sleep the entire night, he will cry out but settle himself back to sleep. Then we will wake up fine!

It's like other nights the opposite, he wakes up at the end of every sleep cycle. Not even crying! Just WIDE awake ready to party. He won't settle down so end up taking him into another room to settle him back down.

I'm a bit confused to be honest! I thought if a "phase" it would be every night, not just some? Which makes me worry something is wrong! But then also he seems to be able to self settle sometimes then others not.

I've tried longer wake windows, shorter and longer naps. It doesn't matter what we do, it's always a different outcome!

Is anyone else having similar?

I don't know if this is what's going on for your LO or not, but I found that when my DD first started to self settle she would be really inconsistent with it. Sometimes manage it great, other times not, but the frequency of her self settling slowly improved over time.

Do you have same daytime naps consistently at same time every day?

Is there any correlation to the nights when they keep waking as to how long their naps have been that day? My 6 mo old sleeps a lot better at night if his naps are restricted to max 3 hours a day. Which may sound like a lot for some babies but he loves to nap so would sleep all day if I'd let him !
