Two year old bedtime nightmares

It's recently been taking us hours to get our two year old to sleep.

We have always stayed with him til he's asleep but it has never really taken that long and we've never minded really.

He tends to nap for 1.5 hours a day, and be awake from the nap at least 6 hours before bedtime. No tv or sugar before bed.

He just seems wide awake and when we get firm he becomes hysterical and then will only calm down if he is literally lying on top of us so we can't escape.

I lost my temper tonight and feeling incredibly guilty.

Not sure what I'm after probably just solidarity 🥺

We had the same, taking over an hour every night from 1 Yr to 2 Yrs. We tried sleep training one night but he was too old and it was cruel. So after about 9 months of putting up with it we did a gradual retreat method where we sat a bit further away each week. Now he's 3 and we can put him in bed and leave him and he'll go to sleep.
