Is it too early for a single bed?

Hi there, my daughter is in a toddler bed and sleeps well. However we have been thinking about moving her to a single bed which we have sitting in the garage. She is going to be 3 in June. Is that too young though? Thanks

My daughter is 4 and has a double bed so definitely not too early.

birchtree23 · 10/02/2023 09:12

So we can lie beside her and read books and cuddle up.

My son is 3.5 and we are now getting him a single bed. He’s on his toddler bed now but the last month he’s been really uncomfortable and we think it might be the mattress. So I’d say, not too young, probably something you’re going to have to do in a few months anyway!

Geneticsbunny · 10/02/2023 09:14

We never used toddler beds, just went straight to normal single bed at age 2.

Teeshirt · 10/02/2023 09:17

It’s fine. Why wouldn’t it be? My DC went from cot to single bed. She might have been perhaps just over two. I’ve never actually heard of a toddler bed. What’s the point of them?

PinkPlantCase · 10/02/2023 09:18

I don’t see how a toddler bed is that different to a normal bed. They might just need some steps to get up to it? A bed guard maybe if they’re likely to fall out

Galadriel90 · 10/02/2023 09:21

Mine went straight into a single bed at age 2.

LadyDanburysHat · 10/02/2023 09:22

We also never used a toddler bed. Straight to a single aged 2.

mama2girls0 · 10/02/2023 09:22

Thanks all. I feel a bit silly asking now as it makes sense. :-)

Mine went straight into a single bed when he got too big for the cot. I had a bed barrier but it only lasted 2 weeks.

DestinysGrandchild · 10/02/2023 09:32

We never had a toddler bed.

My daughter will be 3 in March, she's been in a single bed since June! We just decided to go for a single bed after the cot rather than buying a toddler bed. She did need a wee stool to climb up into it though for a while 😂

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/02/2023 10:51

Why would she be too young?

Babdoc · 10/02/2023 10:55

My elder DD went into a single bed at 15 months, as I was 8 months pregnant with younger DD, and needed the cot ready for her!
To be fair, she started off with just the mattress on the floor, so she couldn’t fall out, then we added the bed base when she was two. Toddler beds weren’t really a thing in those days.

Spotsstripes · 10/02/2023 11:04

My 3 never had toddler beds. Dc1 was 1 when transitioned because they could climb out of cot. Never had an issue. Dc 2 and 3 were 22 months also had no difficulty.
It's when you and they are ready.

I'm the opposite as we, like the OP, have a cot bed (aka toddler bed) - so my little boy went straight into the cot bed at 6 months (we had the space so didn't see the point of a cot or moses basket) and will be 4 in a few weeks. Initially it was just a big cot then over the years we've dropped the mattress down, taken the sides off and it's now a bed. We probably do need to think about getting him a bigger bed now though, but by the same token he still falls out of this bed and seems happy in it so I don't see the rush. It says it can be used until they're 4 and he's a small percentile child anyway.

I don't see the difference between having a cot and then going to a single bed earlier than having a cot bed then getting a single bed later on, as surely regardless of which way you do it, you've still had something interim before you get a "proper" bed and it doesn't overly matter what that is?

fancyfrogs · 10/02/2023 11:55

Also never had a toddler bed, DS went from cot to single bed about 2 months after his 2nd birthday

Ireallydohope · 10/02/2023 12:09

Mine went straight from cot to single bed. It didn't occur to me to get a toddler bed

Ireallydohope · 10/02/2023 12:10

Mind you the sides went right down in the cot so I suppose it did turn into a toddler bed of sorts

mast0650 · 10/02/2023 12:12

My children didn't have toddler beds. My daughter moved into a single bed when my son needed a cot. Which was before she was 2 I think (they were very close together in age). We put a mattress on the floor next to her. She was fine.

Catapultaway · 10/02/2023 12:13

It's just a bigger bed, what do you think could make her to young?

Unless the single bed is 6 foot off the ground I can't see a problem.

Tiredmum21 · 10/02/2023 12:18

We didn't use a toddler bed either - my dd was in a single bed from when she was 3 as we moved house and I didn't want to buy a toddler bed only to have to get a single bed further down the line.. definitely recommend getting a bed guard for the sides though

GCWorkNightmare · 10/02/2023 12:19

Mine went straight into a full size single (with a trundle under it so taller than average) at 17 months after she worked out how to climb out of her cot in a sleeping bag.

She’s still in it now at 12.

GCWorkNightmare · 10/02/2023 12:19

No bed guards here. We pulled the trundle bit out so that if she fell out it was onto something soft (or one of us).

Mariposista · 10/02/2023 12:38

Toddler beds are a waste of money. They are in them for such a short time.
