5 week old only sleeping and eating

Hi,
FTM here and currently never off mumsnet 😂🤦‍♀️
Anyway, baby has just turned 5 weeks old and for the last day or so has only slept or ate, there has been no wake time where he's been content enough to play or interact. He's EBF and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies so he must be getting enough food even though his weight gain is slow I feel.
Have other people experienced this? Is this a growth spurt potentially?

It's a newborn, they pretty much just eat and sleep.

LBFseBrom · 13/01/2023 01:46

Enjoy while it lasts.

Lmgify · 13/01/2023 01:49

newborns are boring little potatoes…

This. I was worried my baby slept too much, boy do I regret that now.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 13/01/2023 02:26

Congratulations on your new baba!
Mine is 3 weeks old and has a window once or twice a day where she stares at the ceiling in wonderment before falling asleep. As other people have said, its totally normal, enjoy it!

Mine slept for the first 8 weeks or so. Second time round I learned to enjoy it!

sashh · 13/01/2023 02:54

What do you expect a small baby to do? He's not going to discuss Chaucer. I love the PP who said they are useless potatoes, they really are.

endlesscraziness · 13/01/2023 03:08

Mine only screamed and ate so you're doing better than me 🤣

Usedtobechilled · 13/01/2023 20:39

It's only because the Internet makes you believe you should be doing tummy time, singing, playing, doing quadratic equations at 5 weeks...

I needed to see this tonight, my 5 week old
Is the same. How did you get on, how long did it last?

Usedtobechilled · 13/03/2024 04:02

If I remember right it didn't last much longer, maybe only a few weeks but I always wonder if it was partly because i was breast feeding and the wee man was knackered from the effort. We had a lot of problems BFing so it took him a lot more effort than it should've to get enough milk

I’m a 2nd time mum, with now 12 week old. Mine did exactly the same - only slept and ate until about 8 weeks! I couldn’t recall my first doing the same, but it’s totally normal. I even called my health visitor to make sure 🤣 now at 12 weeks he’s certainly more alert!! Enjoy xx

curlysue1991 · 13/03/2024 04:08

Quadratic equations 😂 currently up with my 18month old she's the opposite and doesn't sleep, ever ... enjoy while it lasts 😂

mathanxiety · 13/03/2024 04:10

I had a few who never slept, just ate.

Be careful what you worry about.

Usedtobechilled · 13/03/2024 04:26

@curlysue1991 I feel you're pain. Currently up with my 15 month old, I pray for the day we get a full night's sleep with no wake up

My 17yoDD ( now 5ft7) was like this until she was about 3 months old. Still loves her food and her sleep now. Enjoy your baby.

Tetsuo · 13/03/2024 05:36

@Usedtobechilled, newborns eat and sleep. It was such a golden time when our first was born. It was early Summer and DH took work at home for three years when we had our babies. We lived in a little cottage by a stream and drank cups of tea at dawn in the garden as DS slumbered.

He's 17 and DD is 16 now. DH and I remember it as one of the happiest times of our life.

They were both ebf.

As long as BF is going well.

That's what they do, eat & sleep.

Soñando25 · 13/03/2024 05:37

Yes, one of mine was like this until at least 3 months, possibly longer and also still loves his food and sleep as an adult 😆 He wasn't my first, so I didn't worry about it, though others did comment that he was always asleep if i remember correctly. I was just grateful! Enjoy it while it lasts.

DrJump · 13/03/2024 05:40

Eat and sleep. A large poo and then eat and sleep. Eat, eat, poo sleep. The occasional look around to double check if boob is available. Eat sleep.
We did barely any play for a long long time.
