Dummy and sleep

I'm just looking for some advice regarding the dummy.

Our only issue with it is that when DS 17 months is going to sleep for his nap or at night, if he's standing up, he'll throw it out of the cot. And we know he won't sleep without it so we end up going back in to give it back to him.

So today he threw it out of the cot when I'd put him down for his nap, then he whinges or screams until I go in. He did this a couple of times so I brought him downstairs because I thought he might not be tired enough. Brought him back up and he's done the same again, I know he's definitely ready for a sleep.

Just to say previous to this little phase, he just went to sleep on his own in the cot happily. Also when he's asleep he rarely wakes again so we're lucky in that sense, he sleeps really well at night.

So I'm torn between getting rid of it and having a tough few days or waiting for this phase to pass. He only has the dummy going to sleep or if he's hurt himself to help pacify him.

Any experience, thoughts or advice? Thanks!

We had a brief phase of this too. I used to go back in at regular intervals (3-4 minutes), pick the dummy up and drop it back in the cot at the opposite to end to him, all without making eye contact. So basically he got zero attention for it. It stopped pretty quickly.

That's really good to know thank you! I don't want to take it away yet so I might wait it out.
