Will this get better?

My DS nearly 16m was a pretty good sleeper from six months. Slept through just woke early (5.30am). However his sleep has slowly gotten worse over the past couple of months and is now pretty awful.

He is up multiple times a night sometimes for up to 2 hours and is still waking early. Sometimes he’s upset and crying but more often than not he’s just awake, being loud and crying out occasionally. This has coincided with teething (lots coming through) and also over the past couple of weeks I have moved him to one nap as he was regularly starting to refuse the 45 mins I gave him at 9.30am. Also I’ve been told cutting that nap would help with early wake, but doesn’t seem to have yet.

I have a feeling the night waking is caused by over-tiredness on this new nap schedule as I’m now trying to get him to go until 12/12.30. I work four days a week so only a few days in my control but at my mum/childminders he is asleep by 1pm.

Will this just improve in time as he gets used to it? I worry because he cannot be getting enough sleep currently for good development. I don’t think it’s a matter of sleep training as we don’t even go to him in the night more often than not, unless he is hysterical and can’t calm himself down. But we can still hear him on the monitor.

Husband and I are both exhausted. Any advice or reassurance greatly appreciated.
