Waking before 6 regardless of bedtime

So our now 11 year old has always been an early riser, which has also always been painful for us who very much are not! He will wake between about 5.30am and 6am every day regardless of when he goes to sleep. We have moved house so it can’t be to do with anything specific waking him up. If he is asleep by 8.30 he wakes up then, by 10pm he wakes up then…it just seems to make no difference.
any tips to help him sleep longer, or is this just how he is made? He does seem tired a lot of the time, but that just may be the normal preteen stuff

It's likely just his body clock. At 11 though he really shouldn't need to wake you up at 5.30. I'd keep encouraging an early-ish bed time so he gets enough sleep.

Oh he doesn’t wake us - he reads for an hour and then on weekends plays on the iPad for 30min or so until we get up, it is more just for his own rest!

Does he act tired or say he is?

He's just a morning person. As long as he has energy and isn't disturbing other people in the household, I'd not worry.

We have the same. On holiday at the moment. Dts are 11, went to sleep just after midnight, still woke up at 06.05 I don't think they'll change now. I'm an early riser although not that early.

My DS was like this, he's now 13 and is still asleep this morning. The teenage thing has finally kicked in!

TreacsPotNoodle · 21/12/2022 08:23

I was like that at his age, still am!

It's a nuisance now but will be valuable when he's older if he's an early riser!

My 9yo is like this but does occasionally sleep late. That's either after several late bedtimes in a row with energetic days or a very early night when he can get straight off to sleep.

Mine were like this until the hormones kicked in. Post hormones and once back with the rest of the human race two reverted to being early birds whilst two remained night owls. I'm a lifelong early waker as are most of my family l so I just figured it runs in families.

Thanks everyone! I guess it is just the way he is….
