Newborn sleeping too much?

My 2 week old caught a cold off of his sister and he’s just been sleeping all day. He’s woken up to feed but then has gone straight back to sleep. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Have you checked his temperature and is he having wet nappies?
How is his breathing?
When he woke to feed, did he feed well?
Are you breast or bottle feeding?
I would be checking him regularly, make sure he is rousable and he really should be feeding every 3 hours.
Is his mouth dry?
Have you checked the soft spot on the top of his head to make sure it isn't sunken?

If you think there is any problem with any of those criteria you should call 111.
Indeed, if your gut feeling is that you are worried, call 111 anyway.

Is he eating every 3 hours at least? If not, I would worry and take him to be seen.

My eldest slept too much as a newborn and lost too much weight and it was made into a if dramatic fuss. Nobody had told me you need to wake a baby every 3 hours to feed, but she would just fall asleep as soon as she latched anyway.

Heavy nappies is a good indicator but always worth getting a medical opinion when they're so small. Good luck.

At that age I would ring the health visitor, or the midwife if you're still under their care.

Not saying this to panic you but when they're so small it's not worth taking any chances.
