9 week old waking every 3-4 hours

Hi,

I just need some advice on my 9 week old or to check this is normal! My 9 week old is in a consistent schedule of going down for the night at around 9-10 pm and then waking at 1-2 am for a feed and then 5-6 am for a feed. He is very difficult to get back down after his 5am feed so we will often start our day then (he will usually sleep downstairs once we get up, go figure!)

everything I read suggests he should be going longer between feeds by now?! He is combi fed with a bottle at 9pm and then breastfed overnight. He’s taken 4oz bottles since he was about 3 weeks old and still only takes 5oz at his night time bottle.

mostly sleeps soundly between feeds. He is a big baby, was 13 pounds at 6 week check. He will feed every 2-3 hours during the day.

is it just him? I’m worried I’m doing something wrong. Thanks for any advice!

I think at 9 weeks old this sounds pretty good Op! Congratulations on your baby!

BananaPie · 22/11/2022 06:26

That sounds completely normal. You’re doing fine. Well done!

Nursemumma92 · 22/11/2022 06:27

Definitely normal, nothing to worry about OP x

Be thankful, my babies both woke to be fed 2 hrly for months!

Cuddlywuddlies · 22/11/2022 06:31

Yep, normal!

Mrsuntidy · 22/11/2022 06:33

Mine were every 2hrs so you're doing well

Wow that's actually "textbook" for 9 and better than "real life" average for just 9 weeks old! Most 9 week olds absolutely need to feed 3-4 hourly as they have tiny stomachs and are growing faster than at any other stage of development.

Unless you mean 9 months or have accidentally read the 9 month old chapter of a What to Expect in The First Year type book I wonder what on earth you're reading to suggest that 3-4 hourly wakings aren't absolutely perfect development.

Congratulations on your pretty much still brand new baby!

Oh thank you all I feel much better! I have a few friends who have babies around the same age and they all seem to be sleeping longer so I was a bit worried but definitely reassured now 😊

That sounds pretty standard to me. I know that is probably both simultaneously consoling and very frustrating to hear at the same time, you’re definitely not doing anything wrong! Hang in there! In my personal opinion babies that young are on their own schedule and don’t give a shit what the books say, no one briefed them on these schedules in utero 😂 go with the flow, ignore any info that tries to tell you when your baby should/should not be waking or eating. It’s all bullshit.

Totally normal. We had similar with the early starts, I'd change, feed etc then he'd go back to sleep again for a couple of hours and I'd nap on the sofa

Take what your friends say with a pinch of salt! At 9 weeks they are practically newborn still, and will need to wake often for feeds. I'd be very surprised if their babies are all sleeping for longer.

romdowa · 22/11/2022 07:06

At 9 weeks my ds was wanting to be fed every 2 hours and taking an hour to drink each bottle 😭

gogohmm · 22/11/2022 07:23

Sounds good, mine demand fed through the night until over a year, 5-6 times some days
