6 month old and sleep on their stomach

Hi All,

My 6 month old is constantly rolling over to sleep on his tummy (he's also sucking his thumb).

Is it ok to settle him on his tummy if he ends up getting into that position anyway? I did it today for his day nap and he settled so well and had a long nap (was waking after 45 minutes, but managed 2.5hrs this time).

My sister in law settled her babies on their tummies once they could do it themselves independently.

Do other mums here do this?

I still tended to put our daughter down on her back but she would pretty immediately roll herself onto her front from around the same age. Once they can roll themselves there it's safe to leave them sleeping in that position. I can't logically think why you couldn't therefore settle them on their tummy. It scared me the first few weeks she did it but you get used to it.

Official advice is that you should always place baby on their back, but also once they start rolling it’s fine to let them get into whatever position is comfy for them as they have the required strength and neck control to turn their head if they find themselves in trouble.

I would personally be comfortable placing my baby on his front, he’s very agile and mobile now and a master roller. So I think you need to make that judgment yourself.

@MGee123 thanks, this is what my son does, as soon as he is down he fusses until he rolls over.

I think I'll start doing it at naps, he is a chunky big baby and has good head control, so I'm not worried, he can also roll back and forth and is starting to lift is legs to try and crawl, so I feel like he has the skills.

If they can roll, it's all fine.

DD was a bugger for this.
