Help me fix our bedtime routine!

DS is 23 months and has stopped engaging with his bedtime routine. It’s pretty simple: pjs, milk, and listen to some music before heading upstairs where he has been settling himself to sleep independently in his cot for the last few months.

Recently, though, he tells us that he doesn’t want his milk as normal, and just wants to get up and chat whereas he used to relax and seem sleepy. But as soon as we head up to bed, he wants to sit with me and drink his milk. Essentially, he seems to want me to start feeding him to sleep again. The last few nights, I’ve had to hold him while he drops off.

All of this wouldn’t be too bad if it weren’t for the fact that I’ve also got a 12 week old baby to look after. DH works evenings so I do most bedtimes solo. Baby is not in any kind of reliably routine, so I can’t say with confidence what she’ll be doing at DS’s bedtime - if I need to feed her, I can’t also be holding DS.

Something’s obviously broken, but I can’t figure out what. I’m desperate for this not to become a stress for either of us. Help me fix it?

Have things improved yet?

I would suggest strongly resisting any regression. It's likely linked to new sibling and will pass.

Wants you to feed him to sleep…maybe as he has seen you do this with baby?

Definitely a regression - we’ve been up several times a night over the last few nights! Praying it’ll pass soon 🤞

I would say absolutely manage feeding your baby whilst doing toddler bedtime!
Been there, done that and should have made a T shirt..

I mean, to a point yes, but if he falls asleep on my lap I can’t lift both of them to get him into bed.
