What is wrong with 8 week old?

DS was sleeping relatively well up to a week ago. He would sleep in his next2me crib, on his back for about 3-4 hour stretches at night.

this week has been a nightmare! He goes down for his first sleep ok, but will NOT go back down again. So tonight he slept from 11pm for 2.5 hours and has not settled since!! He won’t even settle co-sleeping or in my arms. He starts squirming around the second you lie him down.

the only thing I can think of is that he does have a cold… but he sleeps fine in the pram bassinet in the day, and the first sleep at night goes fine too?

I am worried that there is something else wrong… help!!

How is his sleep now, a week on?

I wonder if baby is getting over tired? I would not expect an under 4 month old to be awake more than 2h in one go at any point in 24h - most likely 1h-90m awake time is likely more appropriate.

If your baby spent 9h solidly awake that is a massive, massive, MASSIVE amount of time to be awake in one go. I'd suggest you probably need to start developing lots more effective ways to get baby sleeping. Try the S's:

  • Sucking (dummy)
  • Swaddle
  • Swaying
  • Shushing

Reflux? That would fit with waking up from a long prone nap in distress. Try infacol, cycling his legs to bring up wind, and put him down for the first nap slightly elevated by putting a thin pillow under the legs of the cot. Sounds like normal newborn stuff to me!

In my experience babies are sent to steal all sleep possible until they're 5 years old.

thanks all for your input.

The main thing I’ve realised is that all the writhing around is just because DS is a VERY active Active Sleeper!

however, when I put him down for his ‘second sleep’, he cries and I’m not sure whether he’s sleeping or awake - how can you tell?!?! Also, why does he only cry at the Second Sleep and not the First?!
