Inconsolable crying after nap

My son is 2 and a half and for the last year whenever he wakes from his nap when at home he crys. Lately this has got worse where he is literally inconsolable and thrashing about for a good 20 minutes plus . Nothing I can say or do seems to calm him down , we just sit and hug. I always ask if he wants a hug and he always does but if I stroke his hair, back , kiss him , do anything but cuddle.him he lashes out . The strange thing is he only does this at home and nowhere else. He sleeps perfectly through the night and always has done . Just wondering what.i can do to help ease his crying when he wakes as offero g food, drink, television , toys etc as a distraction doesn't seem to work anymore (we had limited success with this when it first started happening)

My 22 month old had this a month or so for a while when she woke up too soon and was still tired. We found an ice lolly was the only thing to snap her out of it but that’s pretty niche! She tends to sleep longer and deeper now and hasn’t done it for a while.

Mine did this at around 20 months for a while. It was inexplicable... totally inconsolable, nothing I could do but wait by her side and be ready for a hug once she calmed down. Thankfully it was only a short phase!

He sounds still tired when you wake him. Could be one of two opposites

  • he needs more sleep. This might mean and earlier nappy time rather than later wake up
  • the nap needs to stop completely. If his nap time is causing hus body clock too much confusion, might be better to skip it, plough through the afternoon and make bedtime earlier instead.

Oh bless him. I feel fucking grotty after having a nap so I don’t blame him! Sympathies OP sounds stressful!
