DS (4yo) reducing sleep to 10 hours - age? or less active in winter?

ds on average would have 12 hours a day sleeping. 11 at night for a couple of nights and then maybe an afternoon nap or a 13 hour night to catch up.
The past month (apart from crazy Xmas) - he's been just having the 10 at night and no longer lies or naps in the car to catch up. He seems fine (although a little sleepy around 4pm and then bounces back).

Does he just need less - or just because he's not as active/getting outdoors because of the crappy weather? He did go swimming yesterday for a couple of hours and still struggled to fall asleep before 8pm - being up since 7am.
