3.5yr old naps 3 hours in the day

Hello my toddler is 3.5 and still naps 3 hours in the day. Should I be letting him sleep this long or should I make him up? He’s very irritable and I’m wondering maybe it’s because he’s not getting a good sleep routine . Curious if any other toddlers have similar sleep pattern? Or if this is normal for his age? Thank you

What’s his bed time like? Does he sleep all night? Sometimes some kids just need more sleep than others

How long does he sleep at night and how easily does he go to bed in the evenings? That's a very long nap for a 3 year old, but if he still sleeps well at night and doesn't fight bedtime then fine. My DS had dropped his nap entirely by 3.5, but he was becoming a nightmare at bedtime and waking before dawn so it was pretty clear he didn't need a sleep during the day. DD is nearly 3 and I wake her after an hour, same reason.

You'll have to start reducing it soon though as he's not far off school age and it'll be a huge shock to go from 3 hour naps to none at all.

@Mummydee9263 what time is your toddler going to bed at night and waking in the morning?

There is nothing inherently wrong with maintaining a long lunchtime nap at this age.

My youngest two kept their lunchtime nap until past 4yo, we only started dropping it ready for starting school. But they were sleeping well at night (8pm-7am) so I was happy keeping it.

@FATEdestiny your back????

If he sleeps all night then I would say enjoy the 3 hour nap too!
3 hours seems super long for a 3.5 year old, so if he isn’t sleeping at night I would suggest cutting it right down and putting up with the grumps for a bit

It's 10 months before Sept Start, no need to reduce because of 'school'

Normal on other countries, if it works for him and your family carry on. If bedtime is too late or difficult or gets up too early try adjusting it. I’d happily continue with long day time naps to be able to do things later in the evening as a family after work and not have to be in the house from 6pm etc

OperaStation · 26/10/2022 17:24

That’s a massive amount of sleep. A lot of kids have stopped napping entirely by that age.

I think they’re meant to sleep around 12 hours at night at that age. If he’s sleeping less than that or waking up in the night then I would suggest he’s getting too much sleep in the day.

Surely 3.5 is a preschooler not a toddler. Are they at nursery?

happyfishcoco · 26/10/2022 18:13

I am so jealous for it!
my DC drop nap around 2.5 years old

Sorry I read that as nags for 3 hours and came on to say you were lucky!
