12 week sleep regression - experiences??

My son is 12 weeks and has always been a pretty good sleeper. He woke like clockwork twice a night from newborn and from about 6 weeks dropped to waking once. The past 4 nights his sleep is suddenly up in the air. He is waking crying at random times and will resettle if we pick him up and hold him but then wake again an hour / hour and a half later. Last night he randomly woke at 1.30am and had to be resettled and then again at 2.40am and I had to feed him (usually doesn’t wake for a feed until around 4am). Then woke at 5.30am and had to be settled again to wake at 6.50am (usual sort of time for the morning). Similar occurrence most nights this week. Last week he had started sleeping longer 6 hour stretches and even tricked us with 2 nights sleeping through! So I’m wondering is there a sleep regression at 12 weeks? Could it be the 4 months sleep regression happening early? Has anyone else experienced this??? He has definitely developed some new skills and is fascinated with the world and taking everything in so would make sense for it to be a growth spurt / sleep regression. If so how long will it last!?

Baby sleep isn't linear so this will happen a lot. Periods of longer sleep, periods of wakeful nights, good nights, bad nights. Everything is just a phase at this point, so enjoy the good nights when they come and power through the bad ones!

Newborns tend to sleep quite well, and then it changes around this kind of age, so it's not uncommon for a baby who was sleeping long stretches to start waking more often as they become more aware and their sleeping mechanisms mature.

@Hugasauras thanks for your reply. I had heard about regressions but I think maybe I was under the illusion that the older they get they gradually improve. He was never a really sleepy newborn he has always been average I would say. People keep asking me if he is sleeping through yet like he should be by this age and I have been thinking surely not - I wasn’t really expecting it until he was well over 6 months. And then I’m wondering why he isn’t because it seems everyone remembers it with rose tinted glasses! I think what is confusing me is he has only ever woken before for hunger, despite having GERD he has always slept okay. He is definitely going through a growth spurt as he is draining his bottles (5oz) and last night I even gave him 6oz before bed and he drained it. I can’t feed him more because of the GERD I could cause him pain if he has too much milk. So when he is waking I don’t quite know whether to just resettle him or to feed him. I have been taking the tact of resettling unless it’s actually time for his feed as I don’t want him to be waking for a few oz every few hours.
