Suggestions for helping snotty 5month old sleep

DS has picked up his first cold from somewhere and is very snotty. His sleep hasn't been great for the last couple of weeks anyway but this cold has made things even worse.

Last night he was distressed/crying every hour, hour and a half, presumably because he couldn't breathe through his nose. He never seemed to quite wake up because as soon as I held him he fell asleep again (but not deeply enough for me to put him back down straight away). It looks like tonight is going much the same way.

Any suggestions? He's been better during the day but not sure if this is due to a lack of deep sleep the night before?

(Apologies if I'm missing something glaringly obvious, I was awake from 11pm til 6am before tagging DH in, then slept til midday so my body clock and brain are completely addled at the moment 😵😖)

Get one of the moss sucker things. Works a dream. And olbas oil mixed with warm water in a bowl in the room

FridaBaby Snot sucker. It incredible how much snot comes out of a tiny baby. Our little one was only 6 weeks old when we had to use it. And I'm clearly a bit of a weirdo because I actually enjoyed doing it. So satisfying seeing what came out and seeing baby settle being able to breath properly!

Oh no poor bubba hope he feels better soon

And I would suggest a nose sucker , a saline nose spray these are amazing clears their snot instantly! And a defuser in the room to keep the air clear and some medicine

Thank you! Despite being snotty, DS has been his usually happy self during the day, it's just nighttime seems to be a struggle.

We have a snot sucker somewhere as I know DH has been using it (much to DS's distress - fine with the saline spray, loves it even but hates the snot sucker). And we definitely have olbas oil somewhere...and Vicks! Vicks will work right?

Might be worth getting a vicks plug in tomorrow.

Asda also do a vapour bubble bath

ChittyBang1987 · 02/10/2022 07:39

I second asda vapour bath stuff, i do this and she streams with snot. Also I use klearvol from Holland and barret.

Sunshineandrainbow · 02/10/2022 09:00

How was your night op?

BookwormButNoTime · 02/10/2022 09:06

Snuffle Babe vapour rub (Vicks is too strong for that age).

Rub some on their chest and, bizarrely, on the soles of the feet. Honestly the feet thing really works!!!

Snuffle babe vapour rub. Also the calpol plug ins, they release a menthol type of vapour into the room and that really helped. I also put a little vapour rub onto a muslin cloth and put it under the corner of the mattress. The vapour bath also works really well, from Asda.

I have the same problem! I keep trying to get gunk out with a snot sucker but he hates me messing with his nose 😫 I still do it, it's for his own good. I've also had the calpol plug in on a few nights, but don't like doing it too often as we have a dog and the essential oils are toxic to dogs. And calpol saline spray, which I'm nervous about as it seems like such a forceful spray but I couldn't find drops in my local pharmacy / supermarket. It seems to work though.

Morning everyone 🥴 I managed to get two hours straight between 4am and 6am, and woke up feeling absolutely horrific when DS woke for a feed. DH took over shortly afterwards and has woken me up in the last half hour.

He has also presented me with some Snuffle Baby vapour rub, and has been saline spraying and snot sucking DS this morning. And he'll be picking up a Vicks plug in when he does a good shop later.

Crossing my fingers we'll have a better night (and feeling I've wasted an entire weekend 😩).
