Newborn grunting and squirming all night

Our second DS is 12 days old and has a feed every 2-3 hours overnight. Over the last few nights he has been grunting/growling/making really angry straining noises nearly all night. I am breastfeeding so offer him another feed but he doesn’t want it, he’s eyes are shut and he’s actually asleep but just so noisy. The midwife said it might be a bit of mild reflux, the health visitor said it’s just wind and digestion and can be normal, just to wind him after every feed which admittedly I hadn’t been doing every time, I had just been sliding him back in his crib. Last night I tried co sleeping because I couldn’t sleep through the grunting and as soon as he was beside me on the mattress he stopped making the noise and squirming. If I put him back in his crib it’d start again, so now I’m wondering if he’s just agitated because he wants to be close to me? Anyone have any experience of this please?

My son started doing this around 2-3 weeks old and turns out he had reflux which reared it’s ugly head at 3 weeks and 4 days - I remember the day well! 😭 I’m assuming it’s more than the usual baby’s active sleep noises?

@Maisie2019 oh no - what happened? Yes it’s really noisy, like sleeping next to a baby dinosaur but he does sometimes pass wind as he’s doing it. If co-sleeping he’s a lot quieter. It’s also only at nighttime, he doesn’t make the noise half as much in the day.

He literally woke up one day screaming and didn’t stop it was awful. About a week in we were at breaking point and went to a private paediatrician as GP kept telling me “some babies just cry you know!” Ugh! Turns out he has GERD!
Have you tried white noise - my son is a bit grunty still and I find it helps him sleep but also probably helps me sleep more as it drowns out the grunting but you hear if he cries!

My daughter did this but it didn’t seem to be reflux or anything she was just a very noisy sleeper. I got used to sleeping through it eventually and she grew out of it

Mine did this and also stopped if in our bed. Swaddling helped and eventually we did cosleep a lot.
