Early waking for 2.5year old

Hi, we moved my 2.5year old into a toddler bed about 8weeks ago (he has grown out of travel cot and we were going away, also showing signs of wanting to climb out). About 6weeks ago he has frequently been waking early (5-5.30am, used to sleep until 6.30/7am). He is usually grumpy when he wakes or within a couple of hours after waking. He naps about 30-40mins each day (car/pushchair/at nursery). He just wont go back to sleep or stay on bed. We have tried a gro clock and setting for 5am then pushing back, but he either doesn't understand or choses to ignore the gro clock. His bedtime hasn't changed -about 7pm, he is usually really tired and grumpy at bedtime.
I don't think he is waking due to hunger, as he doesn't ask for breakfast as soon as he comes down and doesn't finish a portion, he has a bedtime snack.

We tried without a nap yesterday. This morning he woke at 3.55am, had a 30min tantrum, then a cuddle and back into bed. He lay awake for 20mins then got up, had another tantrum as he couldn't go downstairs. Finally downstairs at 6am. He has now gone for a car sleep on the way to nursery.

Any suggestions please?

Forgot to say, when i went to him today he has spun himself round and ontop of the duvet. Similar has happened other days. I have put a single duvet wrapped around the mattress and that was still in place, just not on him.

Mines just gone into a bed too, he isn’t a big fan yet - is sleeping 8-6/6;30 but if he has a nap (1 hour no more) it’s closer to 8:30/8:45. (Usually comes into our bed at some point in the night)

he may be going to bed too early
