Can babies subconsciously tell you’re there

We’re in the process of trying to transition our DS to his own cot and it’s not going very well.

He woke up about 5 mins after we popped him down and DP went to rub his back and he fell asleep for another few minutes before waking up screaming. I just can’t be bothered with the hassle tonight, so he’s currently snuggled up next to me in bed whilst I chill out. I’ve been constantly bothering him with kisses and ear snuffles and hand holding and he hasn’t even flinched once.

Do they use their senses to deduce where they are and if they’re safe or not whilst being asleep or maybe can’t get to the deeper levels if they don’t feel safe?

I know adults do it but that only seems to last for a night or so.
